The birth of a style occurred in 1847 when Louis-François Cartier gained a workshop from his master, Adolphe Picard. The small shop expanded over time, and by 1853 it was opened to only private clientele.

In 1899, another Cartier chose a more prestigious address for his jewelry shop. Alfred Cartier was a pacesetter of the time, and other jewelers chose this area of Paris to run their jewelry businesses.

Alfred Cartier had 3 sons, but only one stayed in Paris and worked to expand the jewelry shop that was now known as the Parisian House.
