The Swatch Group was founded in 1983 when two Swiss watch manufacturers, ASUAG and SSIH, merged into one company. There are 18 watch brand companies in the Swatch Group, and Swatch Watches are one of the more inexpensive watch companies in the organization.
The Swatch Group adopted a name change in 1998 when the longer titled company was known by the name of the Swiss Corporation for Microelectronics and Watchmaking Industries Ltd. Widespread concern was expressed about the length of the name of the company and the initials that were most often used in conversation. People said that the company name and the initials were hard to pronounce after a short time, and that the name and initials could not be adapted well enough to be spoken in all languages. The two company names were changed once again in 1986, when CEO Nicholas Hayek renamed the company SMH, and then later changed the name again to the Swatch Group in 1998. The Swatch Watch brand emerged in 1983 and was presented with a bold new styling and design that caught on immediately.
